Asbury Univ. president to end ‘revival’ service, says it has been a ‘disruption to the continuity’ of the students ‘academic experience’

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Asbury University, the site of a now 11-day “revival,” says it will no longer allow people to worship at Hughes Auditorium 24 hours a day.

The school’s president, Dr. Kevin J. Brown, said he’s trying to balance the incredible moment happening at the school and the needs of its students and their academic experience.

He went on to say they will increase security, prayer and ministry support, and event management.

The “revival” has attracted people from all over the world, leaving long lines to get in. This weekend, services will be only held in the afternoon and evenings with a priority for high schoolers and people 25 or younger.

The full statement from President Dr. Brown can be read below:

As we end this week and approach the next, I write to openly share important campus updates and new plans that have been established.

As an Asbury University leader, there is a tension I am trying to faithfully navigate at this time. On one hand, I humbly recognize we are experiencing a historic moment on our campus. Never in my life have I witnessed such manifest spiritual hunger—from our students to the nations—to humble ourselves and seek the Lord’s face. Books could be (and will be) written recounting the incredible stories and experiences of inspiring humility, altar consecration, neighborly love, and life-changing commitments. When I walk into Hughes Auditorium, I have a firsthand picture of the fruit of the Spirit.

As a university, our first commitment is to foster the minds and hearts of students who have been entrusted to us and who are central to our mission. We know the last week has been a disruption to the continuity of their academic experience. Students have not only had to juggle various campus commitments (academic, athletic, extra-curricular, internship) with our various campus services, but also the throngs of people who have entered the dimensions of their space. For some, this has created a sense of being unsettled and even alienation from their campus community.

While I remain profoundly grateful that staff, faculty, and students get to be a part of God’s unique and powerful work on our campus, I want to be mindful of my mandate as a fiduciary of Asbury’s resources and student-centric mission.

After much prayer and discussion with campus leadership, I am announcing our new schedule for the next week. This schedule is an attempt to recognize and steward this beautiful, historic moment of spiritual renewal while quickly moving toward a more sustainable campus experience for our students that fosters predictability, well-being, and continuity.

Along with a new schedule, we are working with several groups to increase security, prayer and ministry support, event management, and overall logistical planning.

I have been so inspired and encouraged by the life-transforming renewal experienced by students and guests alike. I have also been deeply inspired by the incredible spirit of our Asbury staff, faculty, and students. I have seen men and women go far above and beyond in every way imaginable to accommodate our visitors so they can encounter the Lord on our campus. I have seen faculty and staff work between classes to bring order, usher lines, pass out water, and pray with students. I have had students share their desire to make space for guests to experience what they have.

Never in my life will I forget this. Never in my life have I been so proud to say that I am a part of Asbury University. I write this with tears. The people here are so special.

Thank you for your patience, and thank you for lifting up our school, our mission, and our students in prayer.

False prophet Todd Bentley announces he is ‘booked to spend several days’ at ‘Asbury Revival’

Todd Bentley, who once claimed to cure cancer by kicking a woman in the face, has announced that he is “booked to spend several days” in what has become known as the Asbury Revival—a chapel service that grew into a daily, larger meeting of students, faculty, as well as eager followers from all over the country to worship and experience the presence of God at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky.

Bentley, a Canadian charismatic minister and professed faith healer, and who was behind the false Lakeland Revival, took to Facebook to announce that he was on his way this week to Wilmore, Kentucky to the campus chapel, encouraging his followers to “catch” it and meet him there.

“I am booked to spend several days in the #asburyrevival in Wilmore Kentucky this week. This is a sovereign outpouring I’m i’m (sic) going to soak in for a few days! Let’s catch it #Spreadthefire Who is hungry for God too,” the false prophet posted to his Facebook page.

In a message to Asbury University about Bentley’s post, the college responded that “[s]ecurity and leadership are aware” that he is on the way, and a call to the university’s media relations contact was not returned by press time.

In January 2020, a panel of six charismatic leaders concluded that Bentley was disqualified for leadership or ministry based on “credible accusations of a steady pattern of ungodly and immoral behavior.”

Bentley, who was romantically-involved with another woman before divorcing his wife, which he later married. Jessa, Bentley’s new wife, told Charisma Magazine in a 2009 interview that “it was still wrong for us to have anything romantic, regardless if anything physical happened or not” and that it was “sin”.

Jessa has also raised eyebrows with violent shaking while describing a dream she had, with some calling it demon-possession.

It is unknown what involvement Bentley seeks to have at Asbury apart from just attending, yet others have expressed concerns on his online post, calling him to a “heretic” and to repent.

Kirk Cameron pushes public libraries for story-hour reading slot: ‘Prepared to assert my rights in court’

(FOX News) — Actor and writer Kirk Cameron, rebuffed in recent efforts to try to deliver story-hour reading programs for kids at a number of public libraries connected to his new children’s book, is fighting back.

In exclusive comments to Fox News Digital, Cameron said late Sunday, “One of the things I love about our country is its commitment to the sharing of knowledge and the free expression of ideas.

He added, “That is why I’m excited to bring Brave Books Story Hour to public libraries across the country. Unfortunately, though many of these libraries gladly hosted the ‘Drag Queen Story Hour,’ several have refused to let me read about biblical wisdom from my new children’s book, ‘As You Grow,'” he also said.

(The Christian Institute) A Christian teacher in the US has received a $95,000 settlement after she was suspended for failing to use a transgender student’s preferred name.

Pamela Ricard, a math teacher from Kansas, was told she must use the student’s original — legal — name when speaking to the parents, while using the new, preferred name and pronouns in the classroom.

She was reprimanded by the school and received a 3-day suspension after she used the child’s legal name in class, which led her to sue the county’s school district.

UK university blasted for allowing student to complete PhD documenting child porn experience

(The Christian Institute) The University of Manchester has been criticized for allowing a student to complete a PhD documenting his sexual gratification from reading erotic comics involving children.

Karl Andersson wanted to research Japanese “shota” comics, which depict adolescent or prepubescent boys in a sexually suggestive manner.

He said he wanted to find out how people “experience sexual pleasure when reading shota,” and the now-published research documents his own experiences of masturbating to pictures of young boys.

Northern Ireland court rules Christian education ‘breaches human rights’

(The Christian Institute) A judge has ruled that exclusively Christian RE lessons in Northern Irish primary schools are unlawful.

Currently, provisions in the Education and Libraries (NI) Order 1986 mean that RE lessons and daily collective worship (CW) such as assemblies must focus on Christianity.

But a legal challenge was launched against the NI Department of Education (DofE) on behalf of a seven-year-old girl and her father. They describe themselves as being a non-religious family, and the girl’s parents were concerned the focus on Christian teaching may lead her to adopt that worldview.

UK member of Parliament calls for end to ‘deeply inappropriate’ and ‘explicit’ sex ed materials

(The Christian Institute) A conservative member of U.K. parliament has called on the government to produce stronger guidance to end the “plethora of deeply inappropriate” Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) materials being used in schools.

Miriam Cates, a Christian, explained that when RSE was made compulsory in secondary schools from September 2020, it “opened the floodgates” to external organizations providing resources on the issue. The Christian Institute warned at the time that the reforms could lead to the sex education industry, which promotes explicit materials, having much greater influence.

The former biology teacher said, “Now, children across the country are being exposed to a plethora of deeply inappropriate, wildly inaccurate, sexually explicit and damaging materials in the name of sex education.”

University to pay $400K to professor who declined to address male student with female pronouns

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio A university in Ohio has agreed to pay $400,000 in damages and attorney’s fees to a professor who was punished for declining to refer to a male student with feminine pronouns.

Shawnee State University officials agreed to the settlement in light of last year’s ruling from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which found that the professor had a right to sue for infringement of his free speech and free exercise of religion rights under the First Amendment.

“Meriwether respectfully sought an accommodation that would both protect his religious beliefs and make Doe feel comfortable. In response, the university derided him and equated his good-faith convictions with racism. An inference of religious hostility is plausible in these circumstances,” wrote Judge Amul Thapar, nominated to the bench by then-President Donald Trump.

“The effect of this … is that Meriwether must adhere to the university’s orthodoxy (or face punishment). This is coercion, at the very least of the indirect sort. And we know the Free Exercise Clause protects against both direct and indirect coercion,” he said on behalf of the three-judge panel.

Read the ruling in full here.

As previously reported, during his political philosophy class in 2018, Dr. Nicholas Meriwether, a professor at Shawnee State University, responded to a male student’s question with a “yes, sir.” The student approached him afterward, advising that he identifies as female and would prefer to be referred to with feminine pronouns.

Meriwether told the student that he was not sure if he could comply with the request. The student consequently became angry and spouted a vulgarity in close proximity to Meriwether’s face. He allegedly threatened to have the professor fired if he did not refer to him as a woman.

Meriwether reported the incident to university officials, and was instructed by Roberta Milliken, the dean of the university’s college of arts and sciences, to refer to students by their last name only, eliminating any use of pronouns. Meriwether wasn’t sold on the idea, as he thought it felt more like something a football coach would do, as opposed to a philosophy professor.

However, he told Milliken that he would do so in regard to the particular student, while using pronouns for everyone else.

Days later, Milliken approached Meriwether to advise that the student was unhappy with only being called by his last name and had threatened to file a Title IX complaint. Milliken, who originally agreed with Meriwether’s arrangement, told Meriwether that he must refer to the student by his preferred pronoun or he would be in violation of the university’s non-discrimination policy.

Meriwether replied that he would be willing to refer to the student by his desired name, but would not use any titles in front of it, such as “mister” or “miss.” The student went on to complete the class and was given a high grade.

However, in the meantime, Milliken launched an investigation against Meriwether due to the receipt of another complaint from the student. Meriwether outlined in writing that he could not refer to a man as a woman “due to [his] conscience, ethical or religious convictions, or [his] views on free speech.”

He realized that he was faced with two choices: either stop using pronouns for all students and simply refer to them by their first name, or violate his religious beliefs by accommodating the student’s gender identity.

Milliken filed a formal charge against Meriwether, stating that he had created a “hostile environment” because of “the way he addressed” the student. A letter of warning was also placed in Meriwether’s file, and meetings with university leadership to explain his religious convictions were not fruitful.

The professor consequently filed suit, citing unlawful retaliation and viewpoint discrimination in violation of his constitutional rights.

In February 2020, a district judge nominated to the bench by then-President Bill Clinton dismissed Meriwether’s lawsuit, asserting that he had failed to provide sufficient proof that he was entitled to legal relief.

“His speech — the manner by which he addressed a transgender student — was not protected under the First Amendment,” wrote Judge Susan Dlott. “Further, he did not plead facts sufficient to state a claim for a violation of his right to free exercise of religion, for a departure from religious neutrality.”

However, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the dismissal last year and remanded the case for further proceedings.

“If professors lacked free-speech protections when teaching, a university would wield alarming power to compel ideological conformity,” Thapar wrote in the ruling. “A university president could require a pacifist to declare that war is just, a civil rights icon to condemn the Freedom Riders, a believer to deny the existence of God, or a Soviet émigré to address his students as ‘comrades.’ That cannot be.”

The two parties soon began to work on an agreement, which would give Meriwether the freedom to decide whether or not to use pronouns or titles when addressing students.

“This case forced us to defend what used to be a common belief — that nobody should be forced to contradict their core beliefs just to keep their job,” Travis Barham, senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which represented the professor, remarked in a statement.

“Dr. Meriwether went out of his way to accommodate his students and treat them all with dignity and respect, yet his university punished him because he wouldn’t endorse an ideology that he believes is false,” he said. “We’re pleased to see the university recognize that the First Amendment guarantees Dr. Meriwether — and every other American — the right to speak and act in a manner consistent with one’s faith and convictions.”

Because of the settlement, ADF has dropped its legal challenge against the university.

Teacher Mocks Christians with Dr. Seuss Parody at School Board Meeting for Opposing Pornographic, CRT Books

(Fox News) — Parents in the Austin, Texas, area expressed outrage after a technology teacher read a Dr. Seuss-style poem mocking “evangelicals” and parents who have expressed concerns about books they call pornographic.

Krista Tyler, instructional technology specialist at Grisham Middle School in the Round Rock Independent School District (ISD) read the poem at the Leander ISD school board meeting Dec. 16.

“Everyone in Leander liked reading a lot/ but some evangelicals in Leader did not,” Tyler begins. “These kooks hated reading, the whole reading season./ Please don’t ask why, no one quite knows the reason./ It could be perhaps critical thinking causes fright./ It could be their heads aren’t screwed on just right./ But whatever the reason, their brains or their fright,/ they can’t follow policy in plain black and white.”

“These bigots don’t get to choose for us, that’s clear,” Tyler’s poem continues. “Then how, I am wondering, did we even get here./ They growl at our meetings, all hawing and humming,/ ‘We must stop this indoctrination from coming!’/ They’ve come for the books and the bonds and what for?/ Their kids don’t even attend Leander schools anymore./ Bring back our books, maintain decorum, good grief./ Wouldn’t it be nice to have a meeting in peace?”
