Hackers To Unleash Killware — And It’s as Bad as It Sounds
(USA Today) — Even as most Americans are still learning about the hacking-for-cash crime of ransomware, the nation’s top homeland security official is worried about an even more dire digital danger: killware, or cyberattacks that can literally end lives.
The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in April galvanized the public’s attention because of its consumer-related complications, including long lines at gas stations, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in an interview with USA TODAY’s Editorial Board last week.
But, “there was a cyber incident that very fortunately did not succeed,” he added. “And that is an attempted hack of a water treatment facility in Florida, and the fact that that attack was not for financial gain but rather purely to do harm.”
That attack on the Oldsmar, Florida, water system in February was intended to distribute contaminated water to residents “and that should have gripped our entire country,” Mayorkas said.

Lebanon Electricity Restored After Plunging Into Darkness for 24 Hours
(Metro) — The power supply has been restored in Lebanon after a nationwide outage saw the country plunged into darkness for 24 hours on Saturday.
The national grid shut down entirely when the nation’s two largest power stations, the Zahrani and Deir Ammar plants, ground to a halt after running out of fuel.
The blackout left millions in near total darkness, piling further misery on a population already struggling with unemployment and hunger caused by rising prices and financial meltdown.

(FOX Business) — After months of pushing to halt evictions for tenants hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, progressives have found themselves on the side of the landlord when it comes to vaccine mandates.
Occupy Democrats, a progressive activist group, raised eyebrows last week after tweeting support for landlords who are evicting unvaccinated tenants.
“BREAKING: A large Florida landlord announces that he will begin requiring all new and existing tenants to provide proof of COVID vaccination, saying, ‘You don’t want to get vaccinated? You have to move, and if you don’t, we will evict you.’ RT IF YOU SUPPORT THE LANDLORD’S MOVE!” the group tweeted.

(MIT Technology Review) — Last October, a large group of scientists made their way to Yuri Milner’s super-mansion in the Los Altos Hills above Palo Alto. They were tested for covid-19 and wore masks as they assembled in a theater on the property for a two-day scientific conference. Others joined by teleconference. The topic: how biotechnology might be used to make people younger.
Milner is a Russian-born billionaire who made a fortune on Facebook and Mail.ru and previously started the glitzy black-tie Breakthrough Prizes, $3 million awards given each year to outstanding physicists, biologists, and mathematicians. But Milner’s enthusiasm for science was taking a provocative and specific new direction. As the scientific sessions progressed, experts took the stage to describe radical attempts at “rejuvenating” animals.
That meeting has now led to the formation of an ambitious new anti-aging company called Altos Labs, according to people familiar with the plans. Altos is pursuing biological reprogramming technology, a way to rejuvenate cells in the lab that some scientists think could be extended to revitalize entire animal bodies, ultimately prolonging human life.
The new company, incorporated in the US and in the UK earlier this year, will establish several institutes in places including the Bay Area, San Diego, Cambridge, UK and Japan, and is recruiting a large cadre of university scientists with lavish salaries and the promise that they can pursue unfettered blue-sky research on how cells age and how to reverse that process.
Some people briefed by the company have been told that its investors include Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest person, who stepped down as CEO of Amazon in July and weeks later risked his life by jumping into a rocket capsule to reach outer space. Technology Review confirmed that Milner and his wife Julia have invested in Altos through a foundation.

(Business Insider) — An Afghan American who served as an interpreter for the US during the war in Afghanistan said in a Washington Post op-ed that America’s lack of knowledge about the culture of the country contributed heavily to its failures there.
“Many Americans have been asking: Why is this crazy scramble necessary? How could Afghanistan have collapsed so quickly? As a former combat interpreter who served alongside U.S. and Afghan Special Operations forces, I can tell you part of the answer — one that’s been missing from the conversation: culture,” wrote Baktash Ahadi, who served US and Afghan special operations troops as a combat interpreter from 2010 to 2012.
“When comparing the Taliban with the United States and its Western allies, the vast majority of Afghans have always viewed the Taliban as the lesser of two evils. To many Americans, that may seem an outlandish claim,” Ahadi went on to say. “But the Americans also went straight to building roads, schools and governing institutions — in an effort to ‘win hearts and minds’ — without first figuring out what values animate those hearts and what ideas fill those minds. We thus wound up acting in ways that would ultimately alienate everyday Afghans.”

(Bloomberg) — Anecdotes tell us what the data can’t: Vaccinated people appear to be getting the coronavirus at a surprisingly high rate. But exactly how often isn’t clear, nor is it certain how likely they are to spread the virus to others.
Though it is evident vaccination still provides powerful protection against the virus, there’s growing concern that vaccinated people may be more vulnerable to serious illness than previously thought.
There’s a dearth of scientific studies with concrete answers, leaving public policy makers and corporate executives to formulate plans based on fragmented information. While some are renewing mask mandates or delaying office reopenings, others cite the lack of clarity to justify staying the course. It can all feel like a mess.

(BBC) — Afghanistan is on the brink of a total Taliban takeover and President Ashraf Ghani has fled the country.
The Taliban reached the outskirts of the capital Kabul earlier on Sunday, but said fighters were now being sent into the city.
People have sought safety from the fighting in Kabul but there have been scenes of panic there.
The Taliban have taken control of almost the entire country now that US-led forces have all but withdrawn.

(Faithwire) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced this week that performing sex reassignment surgeries on minors is a form of child abuse.
The governor made the announcement Thursday, after receiving a report from Jaime Masters, commissioner of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Masters, Abbott said in a statement, examined “whether genital mutilation of a child for purposes of gender transitioning through reassignment surgery constitutes child abuse.”
In her letter to Abbott, Masters affirmed it is child abuse.
“This surgical procedure physically alters a child’s genitalia for non-medical purposes potentially inflicting harm to children’s bodies,” she wrote. “Generally, children in the care and custody of a parent lack the legal capacity to consent to surgical treatments, making them more vulnerable.”
