A recent poll released by Americans United for Life revealed that a majority of Americans want safer health care for women who receive abortions.
Seventy percent of the population surveyed said that they either “strongly” or “somewhat” agree that abortion facilities “should be held to the same medical standards as any ordinary hospital.”
“This survey highlights that Americans, regardless of their personal views on abortion, stand with us in our fight to protect a woman’s right to health care and emergency medical attention,” AUL President Catherine Glenn Foster said. “Women deserve the same standard of care no matter who their doctor is. Continued efforts by elected officials and political institutions to limit protections and safeguards for women are out of step with core American values.”
Additionally, 78% of respondents agreed that physicians should transfer a woman to an emergency room should complications occur during the abortion. And, three out of four Americans believe that abortion doctors should be held to the same medical standards as ordinary physicians.
Over 40% of those surveyed identified as pro-choice.
The poll comes in the wake of the Supreme Court agreeing to listen to a Louisiana abortion case, June Medical Services, LLC v. Gee. At the center of the lawsuit is the Unsafe Abortion Protection Act, according to The Federalist Society. The act requires physicians to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility and be “a member in good standing of the medical staff.”
Critics of the act, however, believe that it places an undue burden on patient’s care since acquiring admitting privileges is difficult and places a “substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus.”
A previous ruling made by the Supreme Court in 2016 centered around a similar case from Texas. The Court struck down the Lone Star State’s attempt to require admitting privileges because they “created an undue burden on abortion access.”
As previously reported by Christian Headlines, Planned Parenthood’s flagship location in New York has recently sent several women to the hospital after botched abortions. The nonprofit Abortion 911 has recently seen an increase in women needing emergency assistance from an abortion after the New York Reproductive Health Act was passed in January.
